At Silver Linings Wellbeing, we believe that true wellness begins when we listen deeply to our bodies. Somatic movement is a gentle, mindful approach to movement that does just that – inviting us to move from the inside out, guided by sensation rather than performance. It’s a beautiful complement to the practices many of you already know and love, like Pilates, Barre and Yoga, and offers an even deeper sense of embodiment and self-awareness.
So, what exactly is somatic movement?
Derived from the Greek word soma, meaning “the living body in its wholeness”, somatic practices help us shift our focus inward. Instead of thinking about how a movement looks, we tune into how it feels. It’s a powerful way to release tension, retrain patterns of movement, and reconnect to ourselves, especially in today’s fast-paced world where we’re often operating on autopilot.
Many of us carry unconscious patterns of holding and tension, in our shoulders, hips and jaw, that have built up over years of stress, injury or simply modern living. Somatic practices gently unwind these patterns by increasing our body awareness. This is not about stretching further or working harder. It’s about slowing down, sensing more and moving with intention.

One of the beautiful things about somatic movement is that it’s accessible to everyone, regardless of fitness level or experience. Whether you’re in your 30s navigating the demands of career and family, or in your 50s and 60s focusing on graceful aging and vitality, somatics offers a space to realign, replenish and restore.
At Silver Linings, we’ve seen how somatic practices can transform not just how our clients move, but how they feel – physically, mentally and emotionally. Here are just a few benefits our community has shared:
- Reduced chronic tension and pain, especially in the neck, back and hips
- Improved posture and body alignment with greater ease in daily movement
- Enhanced nervous system regulation, helping to manage stress and anxiety
- A deeper connection to the body, cultivating self-trust and inner calm
Somatic movement can be woven into any part of your wellness journey. It might be a few minutes of mindful movement in the morning, a gentle pre-sleep sequence to release the day, or a regular practice to complement your Pilates or Yoga routine. The beauty lies in its simplicity and its invitation to come home to yourself.
If you’ve attended one of our retreats, you may already have experienced guided somatic sessions, whether in the form of breath-led movement, restorative practices or gentle floorwork designed to reset the nervous system. These practices are subtle yet profound, offering a chance to move without judgment, performance or pressure.

In our online studio, we’re excited to be expanding our somatic offerings — blending the mindful strength of Pilates, the elegance of Barre, and the grounding grace of Yoga with somatic-inspired sequences that invite deeper connection and softer movement. These classes are especially supportive for those navigating hormonal changes, recovery from injury, or simply looking to move in a more intuitive, nourishing way.
Somatic movement reminds us that wellness is not about doing more, it’s about doing less with greater presence. If you’re feeling the call to slow down, reconnect and move with intention, we invite you to explore our somatic offerings and discover the quiet magic of this practice for yourself.
